Goulburn Jail Job $21m Coup For Warilla Firm
Illawarra Mercury
Saturday July 24, 1999
A Warilla company has won a $21 million contract for a major redevelopment project at the Goulburn Correctional Centre.
Camarda and Cantrell construction manager Greg Simpson said winning the tender meant up to 300 Illawarra jobs would be created during construction.
The contract would provide work for up to 25 sub-contractors on the South Coast.
Mr Simpson said a decision to install C-Lite windows, from a subsidiary of Camarda and Cantrell, was a bonus for the company.
``However they don't want aluminium windows," he said.
``We have to make special steel windows for the correctional centre."
Kiama MP Matt Brown said the project was part of a $38 million dollar upgrade of the existing correctional centre by the Public Works and Services Department.
``It demonstrates that our local building and construction industry is competitive in the open market for skills, quality and value for money," he said.
``Securing a government contract of this size has major benefits for the Illawarra, both in terms of jobs and providing a boost for the local economy.
``It means job security for Illawarra builders."
Mr Brown said the new facilities at the correctional centre would provide additional accommodation (cell blocks), a visitor's centre, educational and recreation spaces, administration and support services.
The project is scheduled for completion by December 2000.
Mr Simpson said Camarda and Cantrell, which recently built the Wollongong Entertainment Centre, had earnt a good reputation in southern NSW.
He said the company, which also built Albion Park High School, had started replacing four classrooms recently destroyed by fire at Lake Illawarra High School. The work will be completed by February.
