WITH a proud history as Australia's oldest inland city, Goulburn is also well-established as a popular holiday centre for the travellers of today.

Along with its many historic attractions it offers entertainment and activities for all interests, as well as a wide range of accommodation choices to suit any budget.

Just a few of the attractions in the city of Goulburn and surrounding region are:

* The World's Biggest Merino: one of the best-known landmarks in Goulburn, this 15.2-metre-high structure doubles as a tourist destination and a reminder of the importance of the district as a superfine wool growing centre.

The complex, which offers three floors of activity, includes a gift shop, a wool information centre and a ram's eye view over Goulburn.

* Magellan Observatory: south of Goulburn, in the hills of Lake Bathurst, the Magellan Observatory provides an excellent location for viewing the night skies.

* Pelican Sheep Station: just 10km from Goulburn, on Braidwood Rd, this 970ha working property offers hands-on guided tours, with the chance to do anything from watching the dogs round up the sheep to helping with the shearing.

If you want to stay, there are self-contained cabins and a bunkhouse for accommodation.

* Goulburn Regional Art Gallery: one of the finest regional galleries in the State, it has an exhibition program that covers a wide range of art and craft media.

Located on the corner of Bourke and Church streets, it offers other activities including seminars, performances and recitals.
